Duane Meyer is a retired Captain with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department and a U.S. Navy veteran. He has also served as a former Security Manager for the federal government and a Ski Patroller. These roles, among others, have equipped Duane Meyer with a rich background in community service, leadership, and public safety.

Duane Meyer has been a vital part of this community for more than 50 years, dedicating himself to community service and working tirelessly to improve the area. He began his journey at the age of 16 by volunteering at Sky Tavern, where he became a National Ski Patroller (NSP) credentialed Alpine Patroller. By the age of 18, Duane earned his certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). During this time, he also began volunteering with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Hasty Team, eventually taking on a leadership role as Team Leader. In 1987, Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 5 ½ years of active-duty service, which included participation in Desert Storm. From 1992 until January of 1995, he continued his commitment to public safety as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Washoe County.
Duane had the honor of serving three years on the Make-A-Wish Regional Area Council for Northern Nevada and Northeastern California. Over the years, he has maintained his dedication to community service by actively volunteering with several organizations. His contributions include service with the Civil Air Patrol, Reno Air Races, the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles Program, Angel Flight West as a Mission Assistant, the Reno Rotary Club, and Our Lady of Wisdom's Corporate Board, Parish Council, and Finance Council. Duane's extensive involvement exemplifies his leadership and commitment to the well-being of the community.

A truly dedicated and proven leader, Duane Meyer is the current volunteer Security Director of the National Championship Air Races in Roswell, New Mexico, and has served in that role for the National Championship Air Races in Reno since 2016. Duane has worked as a Security Manager for the federal government and retired as the Captain of the Patrol Operations Division with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office after a distinguished 20-year career focused on public safety.
Throughout his professional journey, Duane represented the Washoe County Sheriff's Office as a member of the 911 Emergency Response Advisory Committee for many years, and upon retiring, he became the At-Large Member. Additionally, he served for six years as a Trustee on the Washoe County OPEB Trust Fund Board, further demonstrating his commitment to community service.
Duane has extensive firsthand experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets and contracts for both the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the federal government. With a strong history of proven leadership, Duane exemplifies dedication to honesty, integrity, fiscal responsibility, and a firm work ethic, making him a respected figure in the community.

During his career at the Sheriff’s Office, Duane Meyer demonstrated his unwavering commitment to community service, public safety, employee integrity, problem-solving, budget management, and fiscal responsibility.
As a Deputy, he became a K-9 Handler in the Patrol Division, undergoing extensive training in K-9 search techniques, tracking, handler protection, and narcotic detection. He and his K-9 partner, Tysen, played a crucial role in assisting the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Team in locating illegal narcotics and money on numerous occasions, which resulted in many arrests of traffickers and dealers, and hundreds of pounds of narcotics being removed from our streets. Additionally, Duane performed community outreach with local schools and effectively liaised regionally with other law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety.
Upon his promotion to Sergeant, Duane was assigned to the detention facility, followed by a three-year assignment to the Office of Professional Integrity (OPI). In OPI, his leadership was instrumental in completing complex investigations, including cases related to citizen complaints, excessive force, workplace harassment, and risk management.
After his promotion to Lieutenant, he took on the role of Incline Village Commander, overseeing law enforcement operations in Incline Village, the emergency dispatch center, and partnering with local agencies such as the Nevada Highway Patrol, Placer County Sheriff’s Office, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, and Truckee Meadows Fire to ensure safety and security for all of Incline, its residents, and visitors. While managing the emergency dispatch center, Duane implemented numerous beneficial changes for the citizens and visitors of Washoe County, including state-of-the-art Emergency Police and Fire dispatch protocols and certifications, making the Dispatch Center one of the most technologically advanced centers in the country.
Upon his promotion to Captain, Duane was designated as the Commander of the Patrol Division for the remainder of his career. In this leadership role, his responsibilities included directing every aspect of the Division, managing a multimillion-dollar budget, and leading more than 100 deputies and civilians, all while maintaining a focus on community service and public safety.
